Ben Cuckson
Ben Cuckson joined Lloyd’s Register in 1996 after completing a postgraduate research degree at the University of Newcastle. He is now a Chartered Engineer and a member of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects.
Ben is assigned to the NSASS team as Lloyd’s Register EMEA’s Project Manager, working with the NSASS Alliance members to manage the implementation of the service. Ben works with Tim Lear to manage the delivery and development of the NSASS framework and associated tasks and takes the lead on those tasks relating to the Naval Ship Code and Naval Ship Rules.
Ben joined Lloyd’s Register EMEA’s UK MoD Naval Liaison Office in 2006 and is responsible for identifying, developing and formalising new products and processes to support UK MoD operations. This involves working with specialist areas of the MoD such as the Sea Systems Group and Project Teams, together with the research community, to prepare proposals for changes to Naval Class and the Naval Ship Rules and to undertake technical activities such as authoring of reports and standards, and project management of consultancy work.
Ben’s experience within Lloyd’s Register includes managing large projects with multi-disciplined teams in order to develop technical software to be used in assessing ship structure against Lloyd’s Register’s Naval Ship Rules. His knowledge of ship structures has been developed through plan approval roles, involvement in the implementation of classification rules and training of Lloyd’s Register and technical shipyard employees. Experience in ship intact and damage stability and strength has been gained from roles held within Lloyd’s Register’s Ship Emergency Response Service, where his responsibilities included the development of assessment techniques and procedures used by the department.
Ben has a young family and spends most of his spare time with them and out in the garden. Having previously enjoyed dinghy and yacht sailing he hopes to be able to pick this up again soon and join a local sailing club.
